Brookhaven Beats No. 13 Cedar Valley Twice in Final Series
Dallas College Brookhaven's baseball team won the final regular season series, beating No. 13 nationally-ranked Dallas College Cedar Valley in the first two games of the three-game matchup.
The Bears won three of the last four Dallas Athletic Conference series this season, going 7-5 in those league games.
Brookhaven (15-36, 9-21 DAC) won the first two games of the final series with the Suns – both on the road. Brookhaven beat Cedar Valley, 6-5, in the first game Wednesday and 10-6 in the second Friday. The Bears lost the finale, 13-10, at home Saturday.
In Wednesday's win, Brookhaven scored two runs in the last inning to pull out the comeback win. Aaron McInvale (1-1) got the win in relief, tossing three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and no walks, and had two strikeouts.
Luke Batey was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and a walk. Balin Valentine went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Bo Dinscore went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Ray Jaramillo was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jacob Scott doubled home a run in his one plate appearance. Tucker Simpson singled in a run in his one at-bat.
In the series clincher Friday, the Bears scored six runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-3 lead, and never relinquished it.
Jacob Vela went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Valentine was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a stolen base. Alex Rangel went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, two stolen bases, two walks and three runs scored. Peyton Starr and Dinscore both went 2-for-4. Jaramillo was 1-for-3 with an RBI, a stolen base and two walks.
The Bears outhit the Suns, 12-10.
Hunter Beltran got the win in relief, allowing a run on three hits and two walks, while recording three punchouts in three innings of work. Kenneth Haynes pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just a walk.
In Saturday's series finale, the Bears outhit the Suns, 17-16, but couldn't overcome an 11-2 deficit after four innings. Jaramillo was 3-for-5 with a solo home run. Valentine went 2-for-6 with a triple and three RBI. Hunter Pope, Starr, Vela, Rangel and Scott each had two hits. Rangel drove in two runs, and walked once. Vela had three stolen bases.
Jacob Christian pitched two innings of scoreless relief, allowing a hit and two walks, while fanning two batters. Joseph Jaco worked the final 1.2 innings, giving up just a walk.
Brookhaven will compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central District Tournament at Dallas College Eastfield, beginning Wednesday.
