FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – Dallas College Brookhaven's baseball team beat Dallas College Mountain View 8-5 Wednesday in the single-elimination round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central District Tournament.
The 13th-ranked Bears (33-24) will meet eighth-ranked Dallas College Richland (32-22) in the double-elimination round 1 p.m. Thursday at Dallas College Eastfield.
Bradley Boedeker went 4 for 4 with a two-run double, and was intentionally walked as the Bears overcame a three-run deficit to overcome the Lions (13-39). Boedeker's two-out, two-run double to left in the third inning broke a 3-3 tie to give Brookhaven the lead for good. The Bears tacked on two more in the fourth on a pair of RBI doubles by Nash Nichols and Isaiah Nava.
That made it 7-3.
Mountain View took advantage of four walks in the second to score the first run, and got back-to-back solo homers from Asher Bates and Greg Willis in the third to make it 3-0. The Lions scored two more in the seventh when Huston Cornish singled and later scored on a wild pitch, and Bates singled and scored on an error. That cut the gap to 7-5.
Nava drove in an insurance run in the bottom half of the seventh with an RBI single to right-center. He went 2 for 5 with three RBI.
Payton Stephenson and Cyler Moore delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles to left in Brookhaven's third. The Bears had three of their 12 hits in that inning. Stephenson was 2 for 4 with a double. Moore went 1 for 4 with a walk. Nichols was 2 for 4.
Bates went 3 for 5 with the home run and a stolen base. Willis was 1 for 4 with the solo homer. Varela and Cornish each went 1 for 4. Kortes Howard was 1 for 5.
Mountain View starter Micah Bandy went two innings, allowing two runs, one earned, a hit and a walk, and had two strikeouts. Reliever Sloane Reves gave up a run on four hits and two walks, while striking out one over the final three innings.
Brookhaven reliever Noah Ferraro (2-2) worked four innings, allowing two hits, two unearned runs and two walks, and had three strikeouts in the win. Christian Jaquay pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing just a walk, while striking out one. Nathan Jacobson gave up no runs, three hits and no walks, and struck out one to earn his second save.
It is the second straight year the Bears won a single-elimination round game they hosted to move on to play Richland.
