Dallas College Brookhaven women's soccer won its season opener over Cisco College Friday, 2-1, at home.
Whitni Newbill's gamewinning goal in the 85th minute lifted the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III No. 1-ranked Bears to their first win of the season. Meah Perez assisted on the go-ahead goal.
The Bears answered a one-goal deficit midway through the second half when Megan Perez scored on an helper from Nyla Zarrag in the 65th minute to knot the game at 1-1. Her goal came three minutes after Cisco's Marcelle Stoller scored the game's first goal on a setup from Isabel Carreon.
Brookhaven, which hosts Western Texas College 6 p.m. Tuesday, outshot Cisco, 21-3. Cisco goalkeeper Celeste Guzman made eight saves. Brookhaven's Hayli Nichols stopped one shot.
The Bears are in the midst of a three-game homestand to open the season.
