Bears Pair Named League Players of Week
Dallas College Brookhaven's Aliyana Obregon and Whitni Newbill have been selected as the Dallas Athletic Conference women's soccer Players of the Week.
Obregon, a freshman midfielder from Dallas, was chosen for the conference's defensive honor, while Newbill, a freshman forward from Austin, got the nod as the league's offensive player as the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III No. 1-ranked Bears went 2-0 in DAC play last week.
Obregon helped Brookhaven (4-0-1, 2-0-1 DAC) pitch a couple shutouts last week with her strong defensive play in the midfield. In a 4-0 win at Dallas College North Lake, her play helped the Bears limit the Blazers attack, and create counterattacks in a game Brookhaven outshot the opposition, 31-4, with only one shot on goal. She also assisted on Newbill's gamewinning goal in that win in Irving. At Dallas College Cedar Valley, she played a role in Brookhaven's 42-2 shot differential in the 3-0 shutout. Cedar Valley managed just one shot on goal. Obregon also assisted on the gamewinning goal in that win.
Newbill scored two goals, and had two assists in the week. She had a hand on both of the gamewinning goals, having assisted on Alexa Bezpalko's first half goal in the win over the Suns. Newbill also scored the second goal in that game. Against North Lake, she also assisted on Bezpalko's goal in the 83rd minute.
Brookhaven will host Dallas College Mountain View 6 p.m. Tuesday, and play at Dallas College Eastfield 6 p.m. Friday.
